Rules and Regulations
Eligibility
- The competition comprises two categories
Category A: Song writing (Melody and lyrics)
Category B: Lyric writing (Lyrics only, 3 melodies are provided by organizer)
- The 18th Music Express is opened to people aged below 35 of all nationalities.
- Participants who have contracts with music publishing company are not eligible.
Category A
- For Category A, the song submitted must be in Chinese which has not been published through any approaches or made into any audio and video products. Lyricist, composer and arranger cannot hold any contracts with any music publishing company. If the song has English lyrics, the English lyrics must not exceed 30%.
- For Category A, all entries can be in solo or group, including the melody, lyrics, arrangement and mixing. Length of song must not exceed 5 minutes. The demo must be submitted with instrument being used as accompaniment and vocalist singing the song.
- There are no boundaries for the content of the songs. However, there must not be any explicit content of violence, sex, religious issues, political issues and any other bad consciousness (includes racism and etc.)
Category B
- For Category B, participants cannot hold any contracts with record companies. If the song has English lyrics, the English lyrics must not exceed 30%.
- For Category B, participants are required to compose lyrics for the melody provided by the organizer, which can be downloaded from http://www.ntumusicexpress.com/ . The organizer will provide three melodies and participants can choose one or more melodies to compose lyrics. Submissions are not limited.
- Participants are not allowed to change the melody. Demo must be submitted with vocalist singing the song and melody, which melody is provided by the organizer(i.e. MMO), however participants are allowed to adjust the key according to the vocalist’s range.
- There are no boundaries for the content of the songs. However, there must not be any explicit content of violence, sex, religious issues, political issues and any other bad consciousness (includes racism and etc.)
Preliminary
- The marks for preliminary round are based on the following:
18th Music Express Committee 20%
Professional Judges 80%
Grand Final
- For Category A, there will be 12 finalists.
- For Category B, organizer provides three melodies and each melody will only choose the best lyric composition for grand final. Thus, there will be 3 finalists.
- Grand final will be graded based on public performance. All finalists have to present their submissions. (Presentation of performance includes dancing, live band etc.)
- The marking scheme for the final is based on the following:
Category A
Lyrics : 30%
Melody : 30%
Performance : 20%
Popularity : 20%
Category B
Originality and Creativity : 30%
Collocation with lyrics : 30%
Performance : 20%
Popularity : 20%
Instruments and Accompaniment (Grand Final)
- Performers may not necessarily be the composer or the lyricist. Performers are not bounded by the same restrictions that apply to the participants. The total number of singers and instrumentalists must not exceed 8 persons.
- There is no limited number of instrument accompaniments. The organizers will provide some basic instruments in the Grand Final but performers are encouraged to bring their own instruments.
- For category A:All songs should at least have one live instrument accompaniment. (If do not have live instrument accompaniment, participants need to have live performance, such as dancing, Beat Box etc.) The form of accompaniment in the Grand Final may be different from the demo.
For category B: Participants is allowed to use MMO which provided by the organization or to have live instrument accompaniment.
Competition Outline
- Deadline for submission of works is 3 June 2012. Results of the Preliminary Round will be announced in early July.
- The date of the Grand Final is 26 August 2012.
- The awards to be given out during the Grand Finals are:

- Application forms can be downloaded from our website at: http://www.ntumusicexpress.com/.
Forms may be printed or photocopied freely. Please use separate forms for multiple entries.
- For Category A, the demo are to be submitted in either Audio or Video form.
- For Category A, please attach demo, a recent photo and lyric. Composer, lyricist, vocalist and instrumentalists are to be state out clearly in lyric and form. For instance, Guitar --- Tan Mei Ling.
- For Category B, the demo are to be submitted in either Audio or Video form.
- For Category B, please attach demo, a recent photo and lyric. Lyricist and vocalist are to be state out clearly in lyric and form.
- Submission is available by MAIL or EMAIL.

- No registration fee is required for the competition. Quantity of the submission of songs or lyrics is not limited. Please use separate forms for multiple entries.
- All submitted demos and lyrics would not be returned.
Song Copyright
- The copyright of the songs will belong to the composer, and the 18th Music Express have the rights to record the songs into the 18th Music Express album and use for other publicity purposes. When the competition is ongoing, participants are not allowed to publish their songs without permission from organizer.
- The publishing rights for the top 3 songs will be going to composers.
Others
- The organizing committee shall not be liable for any damage to the submissions during the mailing process.
- In the event of the breach of any of the above rules and regulations, the organizing committee reserves the right to disqualify any participant.
- Decisions made by the organizing committee are final; no enquiries will be entertained thereafter.
- The organizing committee reserves the right to change any of the above rules and regulations when found to be unsatisfactory without prior notifications.
